JUNE 2019 UPDATE:
June 28, 2019
Dear Classmate,
As you know to commemorate our 55th graduation anniversary, we have set a contribution goal total of $75,000 to the Class of 1964 Cruise Endowment Fund. To date, we have collectively donated $59,443.00. Unfortunately, as of this date we are short $15,557.00. Fortunately, we still have almost four months to receive additional donations so we can meet our goal by Homecoming this coming October.
As I reviewed the latest Class Cruise Scholarship Endowment report from the FSMMA, I noted that since the announcement that we were planning a 55th anniversary reunion in the fall of 2018, only $6,500 was contributed to the fund. By the end of 2014, our 50th anniversary year, we had collected $39,873.00 for the Class Cruise Scholarship Endowment, principally from 62 classmates or their widows, representing significantly more than 50% of the class. A great accomplishment!
Although we, as a class, were successful in raising a substantial amount of money in honor of our 50th, we are not doing so well in honor of our 55th. Since announcing the planning of our 55th anniversary reunion in the fall of 2018, we have only raised $6,500 from 14 classmates. I know we can do a lot better and meet our goal of $75,000 by home coming.
As I noted in the April 22 letter, the cost of the full 12 week, 1/C SST is $ 10,566 for in-state Cadets; $11,430 for in-region (15 designated states plus DC) and $13,014 for out-of-region Cadets! The added cost of the SST cruises, together with the lost opportunity to earn money during the traditional college summer leave, place the Maritime College at a disadvantage in attracting students. If we had the cost burden of three cruises, my feeling is that some of us would not have been able to attend Maritime.
By building up our class fund corpus we will help ensure that the Maritime College will continue to attract the young men and women who will continue our Fort Schuyler legacy. Remember, your FSMAA contributions to the Class of 1964 Cruise Endowment Fund are tax deductible (always check with your accountant).
Do not confuse the Class of 1964 Cruise Endowment Fund with the College’s Class of 1964 Reunion Class Gift being solicited by the College’s Alumni Projects and Events Coordinator. Whereas the College’s Reunion Class Gift gets amalgamated with many other donations in support of the college, the Class of 1964 Cruise Endowment Fund remains our dedicated fund in perpetuity supporting the cadets cruise participation and is administer by our fellow alumni who constitute the FSMAA Board of Directors. We are counting on all our classmates to help the class achieve its goal of $75,000.
Don’t delay, donate today to the Class of 1964 Cruise Endowment Fund! Here are the options:

MARCH 8, 2019
Dear Classmates,
Thank you for supporting the Class of 1964 Cruise Endowment Fund. I would like to update you on the status of our fund and to encourage you to continue your support.
To date, we have contributed $56,393 to the fund. The monies have been invested by Fort Schuyler Maritime Alumni Association with the annual interest distributed in support of its $250,000+ annual FSMAA cruise scholarship program. As of February 28, 2019, our class scholarship fund had a net worth of $59,631.56. In April of this year the annual withdrawal of the interest and dividends will once again contribute to the overall support of the 2019 cruise scholarship effort.
In recognition of our 55th reunion, let's all pitch in to get our total contributions above $75,000. Hopefully by continuing to donate to our class fund, coupled with the wise investment decisions by the FSMAA Investment Committee, the Class of 1964 will make a significant contribution, in perpetuity, to support future cruise sea terms. Don’t forget the Cadets pay tuition for the summer cruise ‘semester’, (room and board, etc.) for the privilege of chipping paint and sweating in the engine room, obviously all a very important component of our unique Fort Schuyler education.
The cost of the full 12 week, 1/C SST is $ 10,566 for in-state Cadets; $11,430 for in-region (15 designated states plus DC) and $13,014 for out-of-region Cadets! As you know from previous e-mails, plans are well underway for us to have a great 55th reunion coinciding with the College's 2019 Homecoming.
As an independent, but parallel effort, we are organizing an endeavor to establish a lasting legacy to the Class of 1964, the Class of 1964 Cruise Scholarship Endowment Fund. |

Did You Know This?
"Thought you may be interested unless you were already aware of the refugee flight. The newspaper article was in the Albany Times Union by the former mayor of Oswego. Nice to know about the past accomplishments of our training ship. Tom Donohue" Dear Editors: In the 6/26/14 edition of the Times Union, Mr John T Sullivan Jr provided a very interesting article about the flight in 1944 of almost one thousand refugees, mostly Jewish, from war-torn Europe to Oswego, NY. They were housed at a refugee camp at Fort Ontario on the shores of Lake Ontario. Several years ago, I toured the museum while visiting my son who was then a student at SUNY Oswego. Not only was the camp and its history a surprise but the fact that I was forever linked to these refugees was even more surprising. The ship they boarded in Italy for the risky transit through the Mediterranean, avoiding Nazi aircraft and U-boats at a time shortly after the Normandy invasion, was the USS Henry Gibbins, an Army troop transport. It is the same ship that was provided to the SUNY Maritime College in December 1959 and became the home for the cadets from August 1960 until August 1963. She was also the training ship (T/S Empire State IV) for the summer training cruises until 1973. She was scrapped in 1983 but will long be remembered by those who were rescued by her and those of us who sailed aboard her. |
