And the voices in the waves are always whispering to Florence, in their ceaseless murmuring, of love - of love, eternal and illimitable, not bounded by the confines of this world, or by the end of time, but ranging still, beyond the sea, beyond the sky, to the invisible country far away!   ~   Charles Dickens

In Memory of Vincent Pellegrino, '64
by Robert A. DiNapoli

Vincent P. Pellegrino
For the past seven years, I have had the opportunity to be part of two of my grandchildren's experiences and their involvement with high school varsity baseball. Both boys are jocks and played for the Old Lyme (CT) High School varsity baseball team; Cooper St.Germain at shortstop between 2013 and 2016 and his younger brother Eli St. Germain at second base between 2016 and 2019. Adding to the fun was that the team's manager is their father and my son-in- law, Randy St. Germain.

In the Spring of 2019, my experience was further enriched when a young freshman, Alexander Roth, earned a spot on the varsity roster as the team's backup catcher. Alex is the grandson of our great classmate and my former room mate, Vincent Pellegrino, who we lost in 2010. Vinny, a great baseball fan from his early days in the Bronx during 1950's and 1960's, would have been a proud grandfather to see his grandson Alex on the field.

During 2019, I was able to attend most of the team's 20 scheduled regular season games and both the conference and state championship series games that followed. During this often cold and rainy 2019 season, Alex exceeded all that was demanded of him by his team and his coaches - both behind the plate and at the plate. By mid-season, Alex won the position as the team's starting catcher; a phenomenal achievement for a young freshman at such a demanding and visible position. He was especially good at knocking down and blocking errant balls thrown by some of our pitchers and was never afraid to block home plate to prevent a run from scoring.

Vinny's dedicated and loving wife, Phyllis, since 1964, was at the games to cheer on and encourage her grandson as he improved from game to game. I told Phyllis, that although I knew Vinny was keeping a steady and careful watch from above, I would be his on- the-deck plate stand-in at each game. It was a great winning season for us, and it was especially rewarding to see Eli finishing his four-year high school baseball career as a Connecticut all-state second baseman and Alex ending his first year as our strong varsity starting catcher.

So, next year and for the two following years, between April and June, if you find yourself in SE Connecticut, look up Old Lyme High School's varsity baseball schedule and come down and stand the watch with Vinny, Phyllis and I. Together we will cheer and witness the performance of Old Lyme High School's outstanding starting catcher, Number 6, Alexander Roth.

Thanks for the memories, Vin.

"The Bells of St. Mary's"

The bells of St. Mary's at sweet even' tide
Shall call her beloved to come o'er her side;
And dear Alma Mater in sound of the sea,
I know you've been waiting, yes, waiting for me.

The bells of St. Mary's Ah! Hear! They are calling
The old lads and the new lads who have gone to sea;
Our dear Alma Mater, we hear your voices calling,
The ship's bells shall ring out--ring out for you and me.

The bells of St. Mary's Ah! Hear! They are calling
The old lads, the new lads who go down to the sea;
And so, my Beloved, when blue seas are calling,
The ship's bells shall ring out--ring for you and me.
