RICK KISLING'S SPEECH on OCTOBER 25, 2014 AT THE CEREMONIES:

"Thank you Admiral Alfultis and the Administration for allowing the Class of ’64 a few words.  Also, thank you to the school, for our breakfast in the library which was our old mess deck and for honoring our class on its 50th reunion.  Ashley Scotti has been especially helpful in coordinating our celebration.  Congratulations to our class and all classes celebrating their reunions this year.  I am happy to report that we have 67 of our own classmates here this weekend.

Admiral, I would like to welcome you to Ft. Schuyler.  I hope you find a home here as we did when we arrived 54 years ago.  At that time, the entire school we called Fort Schuyler, consisted of an Armory which was our gym, this old Fort which contained our classrooms, a small library and mess deck, and the Training ship which was our home.  Admiral, I hope your housing here is better than ours was for our first 3 years!  Our Class of ’64, and the rest of the regiment, boarded the TSES IV in September, 1960 and “our Class” finally disembarked in August,1963.  Our housing, for our first 3 full academic years and 3 cruises was on the TSES IV.  As we arrived for our first class year, you can imagine that we thought we had died and gone to Heaven when we found ourselves assigned to brand new
2-man dorms ashore!

You might have noticed that our Class Flag, carried as we marched in, is the Hurricane Flag.  This represents our arrival in September, 1960, in the midst of Hurricane Donna.  We came to be known as the “Hurricane Class” (among other things!)  We had to use the Whitestone Bridge to get here because the brand new Throggs Neck Bridge (above), didn’t open until 4 months after we arrived!

In those days, we did 3 full cruises and the cost was minimal, about $200 per cruise!  Therefore, in consideration of today’s high cruise costs, the Class of 1964 decided to establish a Cruise Endowment Fund through the FSMAA by donating in excess of $32,000 to help cadets with summer sea training costs.   I would like to take this moment to thank our class for their generosity in establishing this fund.  Among the members of the Class of ’64 there are at least 4 past Presidents and many other past and present members of the Board of Directors of the FSMAA.  This Alumni Association was established in 1903 and is the Alumni Association our Class has chosen to administer our Endowment Fund.

We, as a class, are committed to see this Fund grow annually in order to continue  financial assistance for all present and future cadets.

Thank you".

John McMurray's big surprise for the classmates!
"After the scanning of photos, slides, CDs, video, the enhancing, cropping, creating an all inclusive theme, creating captions, adding music, voiceover, burning 70 DVDs, then printing photo on ea DVD, then printing 70 8x10s on glossy photo paper, then cropping and inserting the 70 glossies into the DVDS cases, etc., the project was a piece of cake.
The pics show many of the DVDS drying in a spread formation before they could be packed".  --Steve Richter

"Mary Ellen and I had a great time at "The Fort" at the reunion.... We were surprised to see this "McMurray Hall"....Our kids were surprised to see this also and wondered what I did to get this honor......

Met my sister, also Mary, and her family for breakfast Saturday morning....She took about 12-15 of the buttons and hid them behind books in the library so they will be showing for years....

I met the new Admiral, gave him a button making him an honorary member of the class....Then I really shocked him when I thanked him for naming the building after me... He looked down at my name tag and with a shocked look as to say, "could this be some relative of the original Capt. McMurray, and nobody told me".... I left him wondering.

Working on the surprise for next reunion
Regards, John "

"Filomena Maggavero was our librarian. She is 92. Bob Schweiger talks to her on a regular basis. Sometimes she tells Bob, "You had the best class at the Maritime College. But you picked on Eric too much". My Italian mother is smiling at this story."
